Engage in a broader dialogue with individual students to better clarify their academic and personal goals

Help students construct an academic plan, which include, selecting classes and registeration.

At both the University of Washington and the University of Texas, these advisers assist students in choosing classes that meet each university's core requirements, while assisting them in preparing for their major of choice.

Administer student paperwork for placement exams.

Have general knowledge in all majors offered at the university and sometimes specialize in certain areas, such as, pre-med, pre-business, pre-engineering, or pre-nursing.

Introduce students to the opportunities available in each program, including internships, research, scholarships, new and one-time course offerings, and special events.

Honors Advising

​Honors advising is only available to students that have been accepted into the honors program.

Honors student are required to meet with an adviser twice during your time at UW; once during their first year, and again the quarter before you intend to graduate.

Advises honors students that are on a path to receiving an interdisciplinary honors degree and/or departmental honors degree.

Athletic Department Advising

​Student-Athlete Academic helps student-athletes create educational plans, while participating in the UW’s academic community as well as specific academic and career development goals.

Enhances student-athletes’ undergraduate experience, well-being, and overall development, while students also participate in athletics.

Advise student athletes on scholarship status.

General undergraduate advising at both universities work together with departmental advising to support academic success of the students. In some cases, for students who are also involved in honors and/or athletics, also have the opportunity to be supported by a collaborative effort between multiple academic advising offices, including, general advising, departmental advisers, honors advising, and/or athletics advising.
